Our History
St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church stands as one of Buffalo’s most enduring and influential religious institutions, rooted in a rich legacy of faith, resilience, and community leadership. From its earliest beginnings in the early 1900s, the church has served as a beacon of hope for African Americans migrating northward in search of opportunity, fellowship, and spiritual grounding.
Founded through determination, sacrificial giving, and unwavering belief, St. Luke has not only shaped the religious landscape of Buffalo but has also played a significant role in the city’s social and cultural development.
Over the decades, the church has been guided by dedicated pastors, steadfast leaders, and committed members who worked collectively to nurture its growth. From its humble storefront origins to its establishment as a thriving congregation on East Ferry Street, St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church has remained a pillar of service—supporting families, championing education, and fostering ministries that continue to uplift the community today.
Under the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Kevin D. Coakley, St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church continues to serve as a steadfast pillar in the Buffalo community.
With worship services held every Sunday at
10:00 AM, the church remains committed to spiritual growth, community engagement, and honoring the legacy of the many leaders who laid its foundation. Dr. Coakley, who also serves as Presiding Elder, carries forward the tradition of strong pastoral guidance, ensuring that St. Luke remains a vibrant center of worship and fellowship for members and visitors alike.
St. Luke’s long-standing dedication to meeting the needs of its neighbors is reflected in the ministries it continues to sponsor. In addition to the new Health Hub, the church maintains an active
Food Pantry and
Clothes Closet, providing essential support to individuals and families throughout the community. Its
Youth and Young Adult Ministries and
Children’s Ministries offer nurturing spaces for spiritual formation, mentorship, and personal development. These ministries—still available and open to the community—demonstrate St. Luke’s enduring mission to uplift, empower, and serve with compassion and purpose.
The following history reflects the remarkable journey of this institution and the individuals who built, sustained, and advanced its mission.
